Where do you like to do your best work?
I love my home office area – it is in fact a corner of my dining room, but I am surrounded by ‘stuff’, stuff I absolutely love – things I have borrowed, bought and adopted over the years.
I feel comfortable and at ease in this area of our home!
Do my family love this area as much as me – hell no! ha-ha…. what they see is my eclectic nature in full!
The mixing of wood grains, materials and bric-a-brac – my favourite flea market finds…. oh, how I love a wander around at the local markets or garage sales – I really don’t do it enough but when I get the chance I am there.
So, where do you do your best work? Are you like me surrounded by your ‘stuff’, pictures of family, funny cards you’ve collected, stationary of all types, plants, pictures, books, diaries (got to have more than one 😊) book work, candles, reeds, bottles and technology!
Or, do you have a workspace that is organised and coordinated with a tidy organised desk, filing systems and a few bits and pieces that match and fit in with your office environment?
Or, are you a minimalist with 1 computer, 1 phone, 1 mouse, 1 keyboard and 1 pen in a workspace that is clean and clear of distraction – a calm and organised space I am sure.
Of course, each of these home offices can and will be successful areas to work in – why? Because they have been designed or ‘thrown together’ by you – you and I have created areas we feel comfortable and at ease in, we find it is our sanctuary away from the distractions of life – we focus on what we need to accomplish or we veg out and ‘surf’ the net for shopping, research &/or ideas on doing the things we love – blogging – maybe researching or maybe booking that next holiday for you or the family – whatever it is we do – we do it surrounded by what makes us happy and what feels right for us!
So, if you find you are not getting done what you set out to do when you sit at your computer, how about looking at the environment, is it what you need around you to make you productive? Do you need some music, do you need plants, or do you need to re-organise and reduce some of the distractions? Each of us will know what we need, and it doesn’t have to be expensive. You can find some great additions for your office at the local markets, on-line &/or borrowed or adopted…. the old saying “someone’s’ junk is someone else’s treasure”?
So, lets look at some types of home offices, you may pick up some ideas or inspiration – maybe a ‘lick’ of paint is all that’s needed to give your office a new feel and look or the addition of a rug or chair cover might help or again maybe the more minimalist approach is required and you need to ‘slay the distractions’!
Freshome.com has some wonderful ideas on home office set-up, remember you may not be able to make your office look exactly like the ones you see but like me, pick your favourite items or areas in the photo and try to replicate it in your home office using things you already have or buying cheaper takeoffs, check out K-Mart.
I have two favourites from the Freshome.com story on home office images
I hope you have found some inspiration and you can continue to love your home office as much as I do!
